In 2019 ArtHouse Jersey met with representatives from Enable Jersey and Health and Social Services about making participation in the arts more accessible to all young people.
The needs of children requiring extra care can be overlooked when it comes to after school clubs or activities as the care and support required often makes facilitating a regular class difficult. ArtHouse Jersey approached Jessie and Thanda Mutero of ‘A Little Extra Love’ and funded a specialised training course that equipped them with the skills needed to offer accessible and inclusive performing arts classes for islanders.
‘The Mavericks’, was subsequently designed by ‘A Little Extra Love’ to remove barriers to entry, while also inspiring a new generation to discover the transformative power of artistic expression. Open to children with disabilities, special needs or in need of any additional care, from 6 to 18, the classes take place at Mont à l’Abbé school and are supported financially by Enable Jersey..
