‘WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE…’

OPEN-CALL TO MURAL ARTISTS TO TAKE PART IN A NEW EXCITING PUBLIC ART PROJECT ‘ART IN THE ARCHES’

Elizabeth Marina, St Helier, Jersey (open to artists from the Channel Islands, the UK and France)

ArtHouse Jersey are looking to commission up to six artists for an exciting opportunity to design and produce a triptych of murals for Jersey’s Elizabeth Marina arches in St Helier. The project aims to bring colour and life to this much-loved site that looks out across Elizabeth Harbour and Castle. The project has been developed by ArtHouse Jersey in partnership with Art in the Frame Foundation with kind permission of Ports of Jersey and is sponsored by Jersey Water with the support of the Jersey Community Foundation with funds from the Channel Island Lottery.

Each artist will work under the coordinating supervision of mural artist Ben Robertson, and will each be allocated three arches to paint through a design process that will involve a series of workshops with local community groups coordinated with The Harbour Gallery Jersey. Each artist will be assigned a community group to work with over two sessions where you will guide a session exploring the theme, encouraging people to make their own work, which you will use as part of your inspiration for the murals.

‘Water water everywhere’ … is the strapline for this inaugural iteration of the project with the community groups and artists being asked to consider our relationship with water both in the past, present and future.

The timeline for the workshops, design and painting for the mural as follows:

  • May 2024 - artist selection and introduction

  • May/June 2024 - workshops and initial design process

  • July 2024 - finalisation of designs for each arch

  • July / August 2024 - painting of murals

  • Early September 2024 - launch event

Interested artists with experience in designing and painting outdoor murals should submit a CV and an expression of interest outlining why you wish to take part in the project, any experience of working on murals and with community groups and what the theme initially evokes for you (no longer than one side of A4) to participate in the project. Please also include three good quality images of your work (ideally past murals).

Budget: Each artist will receive a fee of £2,500 and a £500 budget for materials.

Please submit an expression of interest to amy@arts.je no later than 23.59, Monday 6 May 2024.

This Open Call is open to artists living in Jersey, the Channel Islands, the UK and France.
