‘GHOST ECHO’ BY BRITISH ARTIST LISA TRAXLER HOSTED AT JERSEY WAR TUNNELS

ArtHouse Jersey's specially commissioned sculpture as part of No Place Like Home by acclaimed British artist Lisa Traxler. On display at the entrance of the Jersey War Tunnels (no ticket required) from Wednesday 6 September through until 25 October 2023, open daily 10am-5pm.

ABOUT THE WORK

Ghost Echo takes its title from the artist’s series of sculptures referencing those that have gone before, the importance of narrating our history, the architecture itself as ghosts in the landscape - lest we forget - to prompt memory, forgiveness and hope. A conversation through time and across locations, Ghost Echo consists of fifteen shaped pieces cut from a single sheet of aluminium - no waste, no loss - which slot together to form a whole. At three metres tall and pale grey, Ghost Echo stands as a luminous beacon, a portal or a sentinel in the landscape. A doorway through history or a gateway to another place, Ghost Echo draws on the artist's WWII family history and the connections between the Isle of Wight and Jersey - evoking memories and connection, displacement and loss.

The exploration of 2d to 3d, one informing the other. Traxler’s sculpture and painting recall schemes of earlier works giving rise to interpretation and further possibilities. This duality between wall based planes and spatial floor established works is an ongoing dialogue. Materials are carefully selected, often with an industrial bias. The paint application of shade and tone creates rhythm across the surface activated once the shapes are slotted into place, comparable to the cut and join of fabric producing a garment. The fragility and transience of the world and our architectural imprint on it encourage the artist’s palette and expression.
