No Place Like Home

An ambitious multi-disciplinary exhibition featuring the work of acclaimed UK, international and Jersey-based artists that explores the concept of 'home' in the 21st century.

Wednesday 6 September to Sunday 15 October 2023 at ArtHouse Jersey at Capital House (8 Church St, St. Helier) + unexpected locations around the Island. 10.30am - 6pm. Closed Mondays.

One of ArtHouse Jersey’s most ambitious projects to date, No Place Like Home explores the concept of ‘home’ with an exhibition of newly commissioned works that will be shown in and outside of its gallery space. Expertly curated by Rosalind Davis and Laura Hudson, No Place Like Home features the work of local and internationally acclaimed artists and invites Islanders to consider their ‘home’ on a personal, national, global and even cosmic scale.

Running at ArtHouse Jersey at Capital House between Wednesday 6 September and 15 October 2023, this exhibition features 23 gallery based artworks and three external installation pieces, all of which explore ‘home’ from the micro to the macro, including considerations around Jersey’s housing crisis and international perspectives of the health of our planet. Whilst we live in a time when this can be a complex and serious subject, the pieces on display are often playful and interactive and invite the viewer to reflect on their own interpretation and experience.

No Place Like Home showcases artists working in a variety of mediums from sculpture to tapestry to interactive installations where visitors can make themselves at home in a temporary living room. It will perhaps challenge people’s perceptions of what an art exhibition can be and has been designed to appeal to a broad variety of ages and not just for those with a firmly established interest in art.

No Place Like Home features three unique external installations around the Island of Jersey.

No Place Like Home sees ArtHouse Jersey commission new artworks by Ana Čvorović (Bosnia/UK), Sasha Bowles (UK), Justin Hibbs (UK), Will Romeril (Jersey), and Lindsay Rutter (Jersey). Alongside the commissions the curators Rosalind Davis and Laura Hudson have selected existing work by artists who resonate with the broad ranging themes of No Place Like Home including: Jananne al-Ani (Iraq/UK), Rachel Ara (Jersey), Jackie Berridge (UK), George Bolster (Ire/USA), Peter Jones (UK), Daria Koltsova (Ukraine/UK), Peter Liversidge (UK), Harriet Mena Hill (UK), Kate Murdoch (UK), Ravelle Pillay (South Africa), Saba Qizilbash (Pakistan/UAE), Martha Rostler (USA), Judith Tucker (UK), Lisa Traxler (Isle of Wight/UK), Joanna Whittle (UK), Eddie Wong (Malaysia/NZ) and Andrea V Wright (UK).

Curators of No Place Like Home, Rosalind Davis and Laura Hudson, said;

“We wanted to create an exhibition where everyone can feel at home. A key aim of ArtHouse Jersey is to make the arts accessible to the wider community, which was why we were drawn to a subject matter that will mean something to everyone. Home is of course a loaded term, and its connotations will be different for all of us. For many it will be a sanctuary, but for some it may have less positive associations. No Place Like Home builds a rich narrative and delves into personal stories, global issues, childhood memories, and speculative worlds as well as the bleak realities of the current housing market. The artists do not shy away from difficult issues, but rather tackle them with inventiveness, pathos, humour and a generosity of spirit. Alongside the gallery works, three installations will be announced in the coming weeks which will take their place in surprising settings around the Island.”
