Dementia Jersey Pop Up exhibition

AN EXHIBITION OF WORK CREATED BY THE DEMENTIA JERSEY ART EXPLORATION GROUPS, INSPIRED BY REFLECTIONS ON THE SEASIDE.
Greve de Lecq Barracks,Saturday 2 & Sunday 3 September 2023, 10am to 4pm both days

ArtHouse Jersey welcomes the latest in their pop up art exhibition series this coming weekend, this time with work produced by attendees of Dementia Jersey’s Art Exploration groups. This is the first time the charity has put on an exhibition open to the public, showcasing the talents of people living with dementia.

Islanders are invited to Greve de Lecq Barracks on Saturday 2 & Sunday 3 September 2023, between 10am and 4pm to enjoy the art on show. To complement the exhibition Dementia Jersey will be providing visitors with teas, coffees and sweet treats in the unique exhibition space.

Dementia Jersey is proud to finally exhibit artworks created by their Art Exploration groups. The exhibition kick-starts their 2023 campaign for International Alzheimer’s Awareness month in September. The weekly art sessions run by art therapist Lucy Blackmore provide an invaluable creative and social outlet for those living with dementia. The group gives participants the opportunity to use art as a visual language, which can give freedom to expression and an increase in confidence. All helping to “keep the dementia at bay” amongst “people in the same boat as me.”

Lucy Blackmore trained in Art Psychotherapy and was keen to work with people living with Dementia and their carers. Members of the groups all speak of the benefits to attending with “friendship, conversation and fun” in a creative, but non-judgemental space key to their enjoyment.  As one member said, “the critiques are usually kind!”

Each week the activities vary and attendees have an opportunity to experiment with a variety of different art techniques and mediums. Lucy along with her volunteers Ally and Julie and friends of the group Val and Jenny have spent the last month working with their participants on their seaside themed canvases. ‘It’s been exciting to see the progression and wonderful for us to return to work each week’ said Lucy.

Claudine Snape, CEO Dementia Jersey said: “We’d like to thank Arthouse Jersey for their support in hosting us and helping raise the profile of the art group, who produce such wonderful work and have a great time doing it. It’s just one of the free therapeutic groups we offer for people with dementia and their carers which also include music, swimming, gardening, gaming, walking and Petanque which all aim to support people to live well with dementia”.

The ArtHouse Jersey Pop Up with Dementia Jersey will take place at Greve de Lecq Barracks on Saturday 2 & Sunday 3 September 2023, between 10am & 4pm both days.
